Early history Camda Atelier & Gallery

Camdal Atelier is an international studio founded by Enver Camdal in the 1970s, renowned for its capacity and experience in transforming diverse materials into works of art.

After completing numerous art projects in Istanbul using mosaic, ceramic, copper, and concrete relief techniques, Enver Camdal continued his artistic journey in Australia in the mid-1980s.

There, he realised extensive mosaic, sculpture, and relief works in public spaces across Sydney and Melbourne, occasionally collaborating with Helen Bodycomb and Geof Hogg on public art projects.

Returning to Turkey in 2000, the artist, alongside Hacer Koca, revitalized their studio, incorporating fusion glass and terrazzo techniques into their repertoire.  They have since created unique projects for numerous interior and exterior spaces and public areas, integrating their collective experience and technical expertise.

Since 2018, the studio’s artistic endeavors have continued in Melbourne with a gallery studio established by Hacer Koca and Ekim Roya Kose under the consultancy of Enver Camdal. Here, they continue to explore their diverse techniques and create impactful artworks.

Enver Camdal

Founder Enver Camdal has worked as a public artist for more than 50 years and created his own distinctive style, reflecting different cultural influences. He has established a vibrant and successful artistic career in Turkey after completing his studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Marmara University, Istanbul, and then in Australia. He’s completed numerous commissions for private, public and commercial buildings and local councils both as an individual public artist and collaboratively with many highly respected public artists.

His career highlights include:

  • 2022-23: Eltham North Adventure Playground Mosaic Project, Shire of Nillumbik Vic.
  • 2021: Freedom Flock, (collaboration with Helen Bodycomb), commissioned by City of Merri-bek, Warden’s Walk, Pentridge, Coburg Vic, commemorating prisoners of conscience incarcerated for anti-conscription, anti-war and peace activism at Pentridge and other prisons across Victoria.
  • 1998-99: Campbell Parade Public Artwork Project, Bondi Beach, Sydney NSW (collaboration with Helen Bodycomb), comprising 29 mosaic benches and table-tops along 1km of seafront, referencing aspects of Bondi’s distinct cultural and natural histories, commissioned by the City of Waverley.
  • 1996-9: Westgarth Public Art Project, City of Darebi, Northcote Vic (collaboration with Bodycomb and Chris Rak), comprising eight pairs of steel dragonfly, ten welded steel sculptural pieces depicting fauna indigenous to the area that also functioned as bicycle racks, and stainless steel, ceramic and glass mosaics inlaid into the pavement. Also Carrington Road Public Art Project, City of Whitehorse Vic; Camberwell Market Public Art Project, City of Boroondara Vic; Nest, Eltham Roundabout Sculpture Commission, Shire of Nillumbik Vic.
  • 1995: Nuts and Bolts, Newport Train Station, City of Hobson’s Bay Vic (collaboration with Geoff Hogg). A stunning concrete relief mural leading into and through the pedestrian underpass, depicting tools, equipment and broken machinery, suggesting the breakdown of engineering, fabrication and heavy industrial maintenance, especially railways, which were once the focus of Newport.

His artistic odyssey, which started in Istanbul, has unfolded across a vibrant tapestry of locations: Australia, Bodrum, and then back to Australia. This journey has witnessed his mastery across numerous artistic mediums: vast copper reliefs, intricate mosaics, concrete reliefs, frescoes, a transition to fusing glass, and mesmerizing glassworks bearing the unmistakable Enver Camdal mark. He has ventured into terrazzo techniques, and his captivating sculptures, born from his exploration of metal, further solidify his versatility.

Now, fueled by an unyielding energy, Enver continues to create in Australia. Who knows what artistic techniques he will master next? I, for one, am eagerly awaiting his next creation.

Ekim Roya Kose

Manger Ekim Roy Kose joined Camdal Atelier 2023.

My passion for art blossomed during my childhood years, growing up immersed in an artistic environment as the daughter of an artist in Turkey. From a young age, I explored the intricacies of human anatomy and drawing through art lessons.

In 2011, after briefly studying Industrial Design, I realized that my true calling lay in painting. This choice led me to the world of glass art, especially the enchanting realm of glass fusion.  I was profoundly captivated by the transparency, play of light, and shifting texture of glass. Working for five years in the studio of glass artists Hacer Koca and Enver Çamdal, I gained a deep appreciation for the importance of patience and attention to detail.

For me, art is about honoring the marks people leave on the world and celebrating the beauty within the ordinary. I draw inspiration from rhythmic patterns, human anatomy, Anatolian cultural motifs, and miniature art. Expressing each experience through art, leaving traces of my existence within my works, is my greatest passion. I believe in the healing power of art and find profound meaning and impact in small, often overlooked details.
